A codeword solver that follows the rules

A plain word search doesn't know how codewords work. This one does. Squares with the same number always get the same letter, different numbers always get different letters, and any letter already in your key is ruled out everywhere else. That cuts the list down to words that can actually go in your grid.

How to use it

  1. Add the letters you already know to the key - most puzzles give you two or three to start.
  2. Pick a word in the grid and type its numbers in order, separated by spaces, e.g. 4 17 4 9 22.
  3. Press Search.
  4. Tap the right word in the results and its letters are added to your key. Then move on to the next word.

You can mix in letters too. ch 5 6 9 means the word starts with C and H, and ? stands for a square you can't read.

Codeword, Code Cracker or Codebreaker?

They're all the same puzzle. UK papers usually call it a Codeword, Australian and New Zealand papers call it a Code Cracker, and you'll also see Codebreaker or Cipher Crossword. A crossword-style grid has no clues - each of the 26 letters is swapped for a number, and you work out which is which.

Tips for cracking a codeword

  1. Start with the given letters. Fill in every square they appear in before anything else.
  2. Look for short words and word endings. A three-letter word ending in your E is a good bet for THE, and endings like -ING, -ED and -ION show up everywhere.
  3. Count the numbers. The number that appears most is often E, then T, A, O, I and N.
  4. Watch for doubles. A repeated number side by side is usually LL, SS, EE, OO, TT or FF.
  5. Use the letters left. When only a few letters remain unplaced, the list below the key shows exactly which ones.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Code Cracker the same as a codeword?

Yes. It's the same puzzle under different names - Codeword in the UK, Code Cracker in Australia and New Zealand, and Codebreaker in some other papers. The solver works for all of them.

Can I mix numbers and letters?

Yes. Type a letter for any square you already know, a number for the ones you don't, and a ? if you can't read the number. For example ch 5 6 9 finds words like cheat, chest and chews.

Does it remember my letter key?

Yes. The key is saved in your browser on this device, so you can close the page and pick up where you left off. Press Clear key when you start a new puzzle.
