This is the Crossword Cracker solver set up for 8-letter answers. It's built for missing letters: there's one square for each letter of the word, so you can copy what's in your grid straight across. It searches 14,318 8-letter words and only ever shows ones that are the right length.
How to use it

- If you know a letter is in the word but not where, add it to Also contains. Letters you've ruled out go in Doesn't contain.

Eight letters: break it into parts
Long answers are usually built from smaller pieces: a start like UN-, RE- or OVER-, an ending like -ING, -EST or -NESS, or two short words joined together, as in DAYLIGHT and FOOTBALL. In a cryptic crossword that's often how the clue is built as well.
1,511 of the 14,318 eight-letter words here end in -ING. If the clue's grammar gives the ending away, fill it in first and search for the rest.

Frequently asked questions
How many 8-letter words are there?
This solver's word list has 14,318 8-letter words, covering British, American, Australian and Canadian spellings. Other dictionaries give slightly different totals, depending on what they count as a word.
What if I don't know where any of the letters go?
Leave the squares empty and type the letters into "Also contains". You'll get every 8-letter word that has all of them, wherever they fall. "Doesn't contain" rules letters out.
What if I'm not sure how long the answer is?
Use the main crossword solver, which takes a pattern of any length. Or count the squares in the grid and pick the word finder for that length.
